Know the Basics of Wall Tents

If you are looking for some wall tents – canvas wall tents, be warned; a good quality canvas tent is few and far between, although that is not to say that it is not available.  These days most tents are made from lighter fabrics, such as the polyester based relite or nylon, however canvas still remains a very viable option. While dome and A-frame tents are a much more popular choice for the casual camper, wall tents are often preferred by families and by those going on hunting expeditions or basing more permanently out of a tent.

Canvas is heavier than either relite or nylon thus it is not well suited for backpacking however if you are taking your vehicle with you on a camping or hunting trip, canvas is often the better choice, especially if you will be camping in changing weather conditions. It is usually treated so that it is waterproof on the outside, while inner canvas walls do a very good job of absorbing interior condensation.  Due to it being heavier it is much less likely to billow in windy situations and as such it is a great choice of a four season tent. It does need proper care before storing it away. You should never store a canvas tent unless it is thoroughly dry; otherwise mildew will grow while it is in storage.

When choosing a canvas tent there are several things to keep in mind. You will need to decide, in advance, what your priorities are. For example, if you are traveling with children and are likely to experience some rainy days you will want to make sure that there is ample room for everyone to stay inside without being too cramped or getting in one another’s way.  If you are not sure whether a tent will be large enough, choose the next size up. Do you need a lot of storage room? It is a help to have plenty of storage space on the inside of the tent when it comes to organization. Do you need an annex? Do you want separate rooms?

Once you have determined these basic details you will be able to narrow your choice down, making it easier to decide which tent best suits your needs. Some other options you may be interested in, all designed to help both your outdoor living and setting up the tent less problematic include:

Double doors or entrances on two sides of the tent:  This is essential for good cross ventilation if you will be using the tent during warm weather. It is also useful when you have several people sharing one tent.

Full coverage rain flies: During rain, canvas can begin to leak where the canvas touches the frame. The same holds true if anything is pressed up against the walls of the tent when it is raining. A full coverage rain fly prevents problems such as this happening.  It will also protect the canvas from being damaged by ultraviolet rays. Finally, if you are camping out in cold weather the fly will add a layer of insulation which will help the inside of your tent to retain heat and stay warm.

Zipper Doors:  Tents will have either zipper doors or tie doors. For camping in cold weather a zipper door is a much better option as it seals the warm air inside the tent much better than a tie door does.

Color coded tent poles to aid in setting up the tent:  Many newer model tents now come with color coded poles which aid in quickly setting up the tent.

For a little more you can buy mildew resistant canvas or fire resistant canvas. Seams are double-stitched. The wall size, 4’8″, is slightly smaller than the Wilderness tents, though as stoves and cots are usually placed near walls this does not usually pose a problem. Ten sizes range from 8×10 to 18×24.

Montana Canvas tents are made from canvas that is treated so that it is water, heat and mildew resistant. Seams are double stitched. Walls are five feet high.
