Going Car Camping is Awesome

One of my very favorite things to do is to go camping. Hot weather, cold weather, rain, sun, sleet, whatever, I’ll jump at the chance to head out into the woods and live like a homeless person for a few days. (Maybe I need to get my head checked, I don’t know.)

Car camping has always been my favorite way to camp. Sure, backpacking is fun, but it can be a lot of work too. And since I live in the South, going backpacking in the summer is a really great way to get heatstroke. So, especially in the summer, I try to go car camping as much as I can.

What makes car camping different than backpacking? Well, the first difference is that you get to drive your car right up next to your campsite. It’s pretty easy to find a national or state park that offers already established campsites with room for your tent, a picnic table, a fire ring, and maybe even running water. If your site doesn’t have a picnic table then you can even bring your own camping table. Camping at these sites is virtually painless. You can load whatever amount of gear you want into your car and rest assured that anything you need will be found at your campsite.

However that is not the only way to go car camping. If you take some time to look around, you can find out of the way campsites that still let you drive up close, but offer a bit more realistic camping experience. When I was in college, my buddies and I found a fantastic spot along the Ocoee river in Tennessee that was absolutely beautiful. It was right next to a small creek that was big enough to swim in, and had enough level, clear space to pitch our tent and build a campfire. Plus, we were able to drive right up to the spot. Keep an eye out for places like these. You’ll want to go back and camp there every chance you get.
