A Guide to Camping Showers

Once again camping season is rolling around and you’re probably itching to get out there, set up camp and hit the lake. All of us campers enjoy camping at its best and can’t wait to get on the road for new adventures. This year you might want to consider a new piece of camping gear that could make camping so much more enjoyable. Give some consideration to camping showers. Their not that expensive or with a little ingenuity you can easily build your own.

Let’s get the price out of the way first, so you can concentrate on the right camping portable shower for your needs. Outdoor camping showers are going to range from around $20 to maybe a couple of hundred. Realistically you can find one for about $85 that will probably work just fine. You see, the price fluctuates a lot depending upon what you really want.

The bottom of the barrel is the simplest unit, which provides a cold-water wash with a small water storage unit that operates with a hand pump. As many of us campers know, as primitive as this may be, there have been times where it would be wonderful.

Next up are open-air models that may or may not have heated water, depending upon whether you opt for models that are solar heated or propane heated. In any event, place this unit in a thick stand of trees or contrive your own privacy screen with designer tarps! Seriously, you can purchase the water supply unit and a screen separately to provide privacy.

Solar camping showers are popular and not terribly expensive. It’s an economical method to get a warm shower with water pressure. Propane on-demand units provide great hot showers with instant hot water. A camping shower tent is really nice and offers a full shower enclosure. These provide perfect privacy and usually come with handy pockets for storing easy to reach shampoo and soap.

Before shopping consider durability, output and portability factors in your selection. The best bet for backpackers is probably the solar camping shower. These are very light, fit in small spaces and simple to use. You will be pleased you allotted just a bit of space for this in your backpack. If camping near a water source, it can easily be filled and left in the sun to warm for showering needs.

A solar camping portable shower consists of a Mylar bag or a plastic container that may hold up to five gallons of water. However, several styles only hold three gallons at a time, which is sufficient for a refreshing shower. Plan ahead a bit to give it time to warm in the sun, usually a couple of hours will do the job. They come with a tube for filling with water and a hook that can be tied or hung from a sturdy tree limb. These self-contained units have a shower nozzle that releases low pressure water for showering from over-head.

If packing space isn’t too much of a problem, then take a serious look at outdoor camping showers powered by propane. Most of these are designed for hot water on demand and may have a battery-operated water pump that can supply real water pressure out in the middle of the nowhere. Packages include a water tank, propane cylinder with burner, six-foot or longer hose attached to a hand-held plunger (some models), which will pressurize the water. Incidentally, these usually run on a 20 lb propane tank. This tank is the size of a standard barbecue tank to give you a size reference for packing.

A camping shower tent looks like a small tent, usually with four walls and a ceiling, which is made of polyurethane coated fabric and have fiberglass poles. Prices vary based on included amenities. Design your shower area for rinse water to run down hill away from camp, and pick a sunny location for solar outdoor camping showers.
